The Biology Behind How Long Human Hair Can Actually Grow
September 18, 2026

At the age of forty‑four, a woman called Xie Qiuping cut her hair for the time in more than thirty years. At that moment her hair was longer than five meters, a record approved by Guinness. So her hair may still have grown longer. To understand why we must look inside a hair follicle.
HOW A SINGLE STRAND OF HAIR IS BUILT
Hair follicles are tube‑shaped structures located about half a centimeter below the skin. At the base of each follicle sits the hair bulb, which holds matrix cells that divide quickly. As these matrix cells divide, they become hair cells called trichocytes, which harden after filling with a fibrous protein called keratin. As more trichocytes form, they build a strand of hair that pushes up and out of the follicle. This same basic process creates every hair on the body, though the hair produced is different in each place. I find it fascinating that the same cells create all kinds of hair.
WHAT DETERMINES HAIR LENGTH AND TYPE BY BODY PART
A cell type within the hair bulb called the fibroblast tells matrix cells what kind of hair to make for each body area. This is why hair transplant doctors usually take follicles from the body area that they will place, though sometimes they change it. Eyelashes, for example, are among the hairs on the body about one centimeter long. To make eyelashes longer, doctors may put in scalp follicles instead, which grow fifteen centimeters each year. Patients with this type of implant must trim their lashes often. I have seen doctors use scalp follicles to lengthen eyelashes.
WHY PLUCKED HAIR GROWS BACK
Hair follicles are very tough. Pulling a hair out, whether by hand or with waxing, usually only hurts the matrix cells that make that strand, not the fibroblasts that direct hair type and growth. Because the fibroblasts stay whole, the follicle can. Start producing a new strand of hair. I have seen hair regrow after plucking.
EVERY STRAND HAS A BUILT‑IN GROWTH LIMIT
Each strand of hair only grows for a time before the follicle stops making it even without outside damage. Scientists do not fully know how follicles keep track of this timing. Most often a follicle stops growing a strand after five to seven years. With a growth rate of fifteen centimeters per year, this limit means most people’s scalp hair tops out at about one meter under normal biology.
WHY SOME PEOPLE'S HAIR GROWS LONGER THAN OTHERS
The length and speed of hair growth differ among people because of genes, hormone levels, and health. We do not know exactly which mix of these factors let Xie Qiuping’s hair grow beyond the usual one‑meter range. Different growth cycles in follicles are normal and part of human biology, not something outside the ordinary. I think genetics play a role.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A FOLLICLE STOPS GROWING
When a follicle’s cycle for a strand ends, that hair falls out either over the day or more noticeably in clumps when you wash or brush. Normally fibroblasts then start a cycle to replace the lost strand.
HOW HAIR CHANGES WITH AGE
As people grow older, follicles lose cell types, which changes how hair grows. When a follicle runs out of melanocyte stem cells, the pigment cells that give hair color, it starts making hair. Because each follicle begins with a few of these cells graying, often starting early. When follicles lose stem cells, they shrink and make shorter, thinner hairs, then stop making hair altogether. This causes baldness. Testosterone can speed this process by messing with the signals from fibroblasts that keep hair healthy. I notice that as people age, their hair often turns gray.
CAN HAIR GROWTH BE SPED UP?
Hair grows at the speed the body can manage. No method can make hair grow faster than its rate. Some treatments for excess testosterone and some shampoos help with the rough texture of gray hair. These methods deal with problems, not with speeding up hair growth itself. I have tried shampoos for hair, but they do not speed growth.
